My New Best Friend: The Real Estate Section of The NYT

One of my favorite places to read news is The New York Times because of how well they write stories and the way they make me feel after reading them. What makes The New York Times even better is that they have a real estate section and how beautifully they display different homes and how well they lay out the details for them. You can easily find the price, square footage, pictures of the home, and pretty much all of the essential information about a property.

In a recent story by Angela Serratore, she talks about 2.4 million dollar homes in California. This sparked my interest because I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon but have always desired to grow up and move to California. As we moved to different houses and surrounding areas in Portland, I’ve gotten a pretty good idea of what the housing market looks like in Portland and what you can get for your dollar. My family and I were looking in the million-dollar price range, and in Lake Oswego, Oregon we were able to get a 3,836 sq foot home. In my opinion, we had a pretty big house. I also thought that a million dollars was a lot for that house. When looking at what 2.4 million can get you in California, I was completely wrong and realized that the house I lived in was much larger than what 2.4 million can get you in California.

Although most places in California are expensive, that doesn’t stop me from wanting to move there. San Francisco is where I dream of living and I plan to get there one way or another. One of the properties that Angela Serratore talks about is in San Francisco. It is a 2,332-square-foot home listed at 2.35 million. Although this square foot to price ratio is much different than what I am used to in Portland. The way this home is staged and the photos already have me sold. Not that I could actually afford this because I’m a college student, but if I could I would buy this place in an instant. I love this classic San Francisco-style home and because of the amazing central location, it makes sense why the pricing would be high.

The New York Times real estate section does the best job of showing off beautiful homes that aren’t too luxurious for the average buyer. I find that many outlets like arch digest show extreme luxury homes (I still love arch digest with my entire being) but sometimes it proves beneficial to show off homes that people can realistically buy without being extremely rich. I love this section because it’s such a quick and simple way to discover beautiful homes in different states.  If you have a beautiful home that you are trying to sell, rather than just marketing it on Redfin or Zillow, go the extra mile to have it marketed in the real estate section of  The New York Times, I know it would get so many more offers.
